What Food Can $12.64 Get You?

After I got off work on Friday, I started thinking about the roasted rotisserie chicken at the grocery store. Friday marks the end of the week, and I want to eat something different for dinner. But I don’t want to spend a lot of money eating out.

I have been thinking the rotisserie chicken after work almost every Friday for a month. Usually, I’ll just go home and try to cook something simple but different. The craving would then be appeased until the next Friday.

Yesterday, I gave in. I went to the grocery thinking I’d just get the chicken but came back with other things (as I feared and expected). But it’s ok. It’s what I’ll need for the week anyway. It cost me $12.64 to get the following items:

My $12.64 groceries for the week.

Produce

1 lime: $.33

8 bananas: $1.86 ($.49/lb)

Bakery

Apple pie: $3.99 (I LOVE apple pie and have been eyeing it for weeks!)

French baguette: $.99

Deli

Rotisserie chicken: $4.99

Comparing

As I paid for the groceries, I was thinking: “This is a lot of food for $12.64.” If I had gone to a restaurant, it would just be  one simple meal at an average restaurant.

The food I got can last me for the whole work week. The only thing I’d need to add is rice which I already have at home. I’m on a diet, so I don’t and try not to eat a lot anyway.

That sad, I still like to eat out every once in a while. But most of the time, this is my frugal way to take care of my food expenses: Shop at the grocery store and don’t expensive food.
