I had a rice cake that had been sitting in the freezer for almost 3 months. It wouldn’t be a problem if that rice cake had not been sitting in room temperature for 10 days prior to that. I had put it in the pantry and completely forgotten about it.
I didn’t take a picture of my moldy rice cake, but a good one should look like this.
When I opened the pantry to find something else, I saw the lonely rice cake sitting there. I wasn’t ready to eat it, so I just shoved it in the freezer. When I got home from work on Friday, I decided to steam it.
But when I unwrapped the rice cake, I found out that part of it was a bit moldy and smelled strange. 90% of the rice cake seemed ok although the rice was super hard. Determined to save the rice cake, I decided to fry it. And it turned out much better than I expected.
Rice cake in the frying pan
When I was frying the rice cake, I kept doubting if I should be even saving it at all. I was starving, and it took me 20 minutes to fry the whole thing. But the final product just looked so gorgeous, and it was just delicious!
My aunt said it looked like breaded shrimp, but it was much tastier than that.
Conclusion
I’m so glad I decided to salvage the rice cake instead of simply tossing it in the trash. The effort of preventing food waste not only saved me money on groceries but also brought me a sense of triumph. I felt so proud of myself and was completely full after that.
It was a happy Friday! 🙂
